Isolate (WPI) V Concentrate (WPC) Protein
Seen these terms, and wondered what they meant? Or why you should care? Is your choice of protein driven purely by perceived bang for buck?
Whey protein isolate (WPI) v Whey protein concentrate (WPC)? What is the difference? You're not alone if your protein journey is just beginning.
Protein powders are NOT all the same.
The most common form of protein is whey.
Why?
Because whey protein is a complete, fast-digesting animal-based protein and essentially a natural milk by-product. You also get pea proteins, made from peas of course, and plant-based proteins, which can include hemp, brown rice, and soy. You can read more on the types of proteins available here.
Isolate v concentrate.
-
Concentrate protein is processed to around 80% or less protein by weight.
-
Isolate undergoes different processing to around 90%+ protein by weight.
Both concentrate and isolate can be quality proteins with benefits. The steps in the production of isolate protein however result in fewer carbs and fat per serving.
Isolate also has a lower lactose content so it can be a better choice for those who are lactose intolerant. It is possible to get the same protein intake from concentrate, you just need to have more and get the additional sugars and carbs that come with it.
Hydrolysed protein
Hydrolysed protein is protein that has been even further processed through exposure to heat, acids, or enzymes (essentially pre-digested) and can thus be more rapidly absorbed. It is essentially a broken-down version that’s easier on your digestive system, but it can be harder to find, generally is more expensive and on average is used by elite athletes.
What we would recommend.
I don't want to have to think about this stuff. Thats why we selected what we believed was the best protein available to support aging bodies, and that was a whey isolate protein, high in leucine for muscle. Whey is a complete protein and being an isolate means it is high in protein as % of total. It also tastes great, us easy on the gut and mixes easily with water due to micro-filtration. One decision, easy.
Isolate, bang for buck means 90% protein, so fewer fats and carbs, and rapid absorption, as well as all the essential amino acids.
The Old Bull Isolate is 95% protein and is intentionally high in leucine to support muscle strength and maintenance. Read our protein guide here for more information on what protein is and why you need it.
Numerous studies show that whey protein can help you gain muscle (over 1 KG for an over 50 male), increase strength, and promote fat loss.
