Small in the Universe. Big in your Choices.

The universe began 13.8 billion years ago, odd. Space has been expanding ever since. The observable universe is about 93 billions light-years across whereas Earth is a mere 12,700 km. (Bit like a grain of sand in the Sahara dessert.) We don't know what's outside the observable universe. Is there space outside the universe? Or is the space itself inside the universe?

This is based on our understanding of physics, which we hope is correct. 

Bottom line, we fight over a small rocky planet, orbiting an average star, in one part of the galaxy. The universe doesn't need us, and doesn't stop expanding because of what you're up to on a Friday morning.

YOU are still important.

While earth may seem small. For us, it is everything. From inside our lives, choices matter enormously. They affect you, your daughter’s laughter, your health, your work, these are our universes, and in this universe we are central to ourselves and each other.

Choices

We control our choices: how we treat each other, what we build, and whether we burn the planet or preserve it. Our decisions can echo for generations. We are participants, and that should be enough to make the game worth playing.

So remember, personally you’re huge. Your decisions echo across your body, your family, your mates, and maybe even history. You can control whether you walk 20 minutes or watch a YouTube video. Whether you call a mate or doom scroll on Instagram. Whether you eat like an engine or a garbage bin. These are your choices, and the in context, they are big ones in your universe.

So remember:

1. The universe is vast.
2. Life is short.
3. Your agency is real.

So next time you feel small in the scheme of things, remember: you don’t have to be big in the universe — just big in your family and your own life. 

And yes, you’re tiny in the universe, but you can still choose to do the right thing, go for a run, eat right, and be a legend, of sorts.
